Concrete and dirt break the usual rule of dumpster rental. For almost every other job the question is how much room you need. For heavy material the question is how much weight the truck can carry, and the answer is far less than the box can hold. That is why a patio removal in Bentonville rarely goes in a twenty-yard box, and why the hauler will ask what the material is before anything else.

Why heavy material gets a small box

A solid cubic yard of concrete weighs about two tons, and broken pieces with air between them still weigh well over a ton per yard. A twenty-yard box filled to the rim with slab would weigh several times what a roll-off truck is built to lift, and every ton past the allowance is billed at the overage rate besides. So heavy material goes in a small box, usually eight or ten yards, and that box is often filled only part of the way. Local price lists include as little as one ton with their smallest box, which shows how fast concrete uses up an allowance.

Clean loads versus mixed loads

Clean concrete, brick, block and soil, with nothing else mixed in, can often be handled as clean fill rather than landfill debris. At least one Northwest Arkansas hauler steers concrete and other heavy materials into a dedicated clean-fill container for exactly this reason. Throw a bag of trash, a piece of lumber or a roll of old carpet into that load and it becomes mixed debris, weighed and billed like everything else. Keep the heavy box clean and keep the household debris in a separate one.

Rebar, wire and roots

Ask how the hauler wants reinforced concrete handled. Rebar and welded wire mesh can change where a load is allowed to go, and some clean-fill outlets refuse them. Soil with heavy roots, stumps and grass mats is closer to yard waste than to fill, and the City of Bentonville Compost Facility takes yard waste delivered at no charge. Rock and gravel from regrading count as heavy material and belong with the concrete, not the trash.

Where the box can sit

A loaded heavy box is the hardest thing on a driveway that a homeowner will ever park there. Ask for boards under the rails, keep it off any concrete poured in the last few weeks, and say if the drive is gravel or the ground is soft after rain. The truck needs a straight approach and room overhead to tip the box, and a heavy load needs a firm surface to winch it back on. If the only spot is the street, that is the city right-of-way, and the Street Department decides whether it needs a permit.

Common Bentonville jobs

Patio and sidewalk replacement, driveway tear-outs ahead of a new pour, foundation and slab repair, retaining walls coming down, and the regrading that comes with new landscaping. On older lots near downtown, removing a buried slab or an old garage floor is a common surprise. Each of those produces more weight than the homeowner expects, which is why a ten-yard box loaded to a marked line beats a bigger box loaded to the top.

Loading a heavy box

Spread the weight evenly across the floor, never piled at one end, so the truck can lift and carry the box safely. Break slabs into pieces you can handle. Stop at the fill line the hauler gives you, even if the box looks half empty. A box too heavy to lift gets partly unloaded on site, by hand, and that labor is yours.

What it costs

The flat rate for a small box around Bentonville is on the pricing page, along with the per-ton overage posted by Northwest Arkansas haulers. For concrete and dirt, that overage figure matters more than the box price, so get both before the first slab is broken.

Hauling someone else's trash takes a district license

The Benton County Solid Waste District states that before anyone hauls waste commercially anywhere in Arkansas they must first obtain a license from the local regional solid waste management district, and that the license covers collecting waste from households or businesses on a temporary or permanent basis, transporting it within or through the district, and disposing of it. The district warns that providing collection service without a hauler license violates Arkansas law and district rules. Licensed haulers file an annual application due December 15 and quarterly reports, including reports on loads taken to transfer stations and to the Eco Vista Landfill.

Why it matters: A roll-off box is solid waste collection under that rule, so the company dropping it in your driveway needs a district license. Asking for it before booking separates an established hauler from a truck that will dump the load somewhere it should not go.

Anything in the street goes through the Street Department

The City of Bentonville requires a right-of-way permit at all times during which any work is done upon, in, under, above or about any street, alley, curb, gutter, sidewalk or other public right-of-way in the city. Applications are made online through the city's eTrakit system with a site plan, review takes five business days, a Traffic Management Plan following the MUTCD is required for any closure or detour, and all fees and bonds are paid before the permit issues. The approved permit must be posted where it is visible from the street. The Street Department, at 479-271-3130, administers the permit. The page does not list dumpsters or containers by name.

Why it matters: A box on the driveway or the lot is private property. A box on the street, the curb or the sidewalk is in the right-of-way, so the question goes to the Street Department a week ahead of delivery day, not the morning the truck arrives.

Fewer permits, bigger houses, a pipeline that doubled

Bentonville's 2024 Annual Development Report estimates the city's population at 63,089 on 31 December 2024, up 16 percent from the 54,164 counted in the 2020 Census. The city issued 1,354 building permits in 2024, including 234 residential remodel and addition permits. The average new single-family house permitted grew to 3,115 square feet, up from 2,175 in 2023, and the number of residential units planned rose 92 percent to 2,907.

Why it matters: Bigger houses throw off more framing scrap, drywall and packaging per lot, and nearly three thousand planned units means the job-site dumpster stays a fixture of Bentonville streets. Remodels add a steady second stream of kitchens, baths and floors coming out of existing houses.

One regional landfill, and separate sites for what it refuses

Eco-Vista Landfill in Springdale covers 609 acres, including a 147-acre Class 1 municipal solid waste landfill and a 60-acre Class 4 construction and demolition debris landfill. It does not accept hazardous materials, is open to the public 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, and is closed Saturday and Sunday. The Benton County Solid Waste District runs special waste drop-off sites at 5702 Brookside Road in Centerton and 2307 North Arkansas Street in Rogers for furniture, appliances, electronics, metal items, tires and household hazardous materials, with fees and material limits applying.

Why it matters: Construction debris from a Bentonville box has a permitted place to go, and the weekend closure is why a Friday afternoon swap can wait until Monday. Tires, paint, batteries and refrigerant appliances belong at the district's sites, not under a layer of drywall.
